When we unite, We make our life better

We believe all hands must be on deck in the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the lives and communities of our countrymen. Therefore, all must focus their efforts and resources on this major and substantial task.

Providing relief and assistance to the thousands of victims is the priority in the short term. In the long term, more needs to be done to rebuild the lives and bring reconstruction and rehabilitation to the communities ravaged by Ketsana (Ondoy) and Parma (Pepeng).

While we remain committed to the cause of peace through interfaith dialogue, our priority now should be the immediate and long term needs of our people.

We have, therefore, consulted our friends and partners in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), through Egypt which is the Chair of the NAM Coordinating Bureau in New York, who have chosen the Philippines to host the Special NAM Ministerial Meeting (SNAMMM) on Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation for Peace and Development this December in Manila.

We are confident our partners and friends, who have been helping us in our hour of distress brought about by the calamities, will understand our decision to move the holding of the SNAMMM to an appropriate date next year. END

Philippines Leads Asian Ambassadors at Asia-Pacific Week

Posted: 23 Oct 2009 06:00 PM PDT

24 October 2009 – The Philippines, as Chair of the 22-member group of Asian Ambassadors based in Berlin, spoke on behalf of the region on the topic, “Europe and Asia – Together out of the Crises”.

The event, which was organized by the German-Asian Business Circle (Deutsch-Asiatischer Wirtschaftskreis e.V.) as a business event of the 2009 Asia-Pacific Weeks (APW) Berlin, was held at the Berlin Town Hall on last October 14.

About 200 German businessmen, researchers, diplomatic officials and university students attended the event. The other resource persons were Prof. Dr. Eberhard Sandscheiner of the German Council on Foreign Relations – the research arm of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Günther Hardock, Managing Director of LIEBHERR-Werk, a major German construction company; and Mr. Rudolf Weiler, managing director of Digisound-Electronik. Mr. Michael Lorenz of Lorenz and Partners (Bangkok) moderated the discussion.

As the only representative from an Asian government, Philippine Ambassador to Germany Delia Domingo-Albert focused on how the ASEAN region was coping with the global economic crisis. She highlighted the lessons learned from the 1997 financial crises, and cited the actions taken by ASEAN together with its three regional partners – China, Japan and Korea – such as the Chiang Mai Initiative, the Asian Bond Markets Initiative and the Asian Currency Unit.

She cited the relative peace and stability of the region for the past 40 years of ASEAN’s existence, as well as the efforts at regional integration which will build a common market and seamless production base by 2015 as reasons for ASEAN as an attractive partner for Europe.

Moreover, ASEAN’s experience and institutional support makes it a natural base for larger regional groupings such as the ASEAN Plus Six (China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand), which encompasses Asia’s three largest economies.

Ambassador Albert highlighted the growing close cooperation among Asian countries which has enabled them to face the economic crisis. She praised the private sector for its renewed confidence especially in the Philippine economy, which hopes to grow by 4.9 percent in 2010, and for its initiatives to spur growth and contribute positively towards bringing the end of the crisis in sight.
