DFA Secretary Romulo and Iran Foreign Minister Mottaki Pledge to Intensify RP-Iran Relations, Boost Trade Exchanges

Posted: 18 Nov 2009 03:52 AM PST

18 November 2009 – Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo met with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki today to review the state of Philippine-Iran bilateral relations and discuss ways to further strengthen ties between the two countries.

During their cordial and productive meeting, Secretary Romulo and Minister Mottaki pledged to further strengthen Philippine-Iran partnership, particularly in the economic sphere.

For this purpose, they agreed to the convening of the 5th RP-Iran Joint Commission Meeting in the first quarter of 2010 to look into and adopt practical measures that will boost opportunities for both sides in trade, investments, energy and tourism..

Secretary Romulo also affirmed the country’s hosting next year of the 2nd RP-Iran Joint Consular Meeting to take up matters pertaining to visa entry for their nationals and other issues. The Joint Meeting will also consider Iran’s proposal for the conclusion of an agreement that will waive visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and official passports.

Minister Mottaki informed Secretary Romulo that the Iranian Government, under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, “has put relations with Asia as its priority.” He also paid tribute to the contributions to the Iranian economy and society of the thousands of Filipinos who worked in Iran in the ‘70s, stating that they are friends who “know Iran very well.”

Noting that Iran has “contributed much to world civilization,” Secretary Romulo reaffirmed the Philippine Government’s partnership with Iran in promoting interfaith dialogue and cooperation at the bilateral, regional and international fora.

The Philippines and Iran are both staunch advocates of interfaith dialogue and cooperation. The Philippines has been a leader in promoting interfaith initiatives at the international level while Iran is an active member of the Alliance of Civilizations Group of Friends.

Secretary Romulo also thanked Minister Mottaki for the Iranian government’s steadfast support of the Philippine bid for observer status in the Organization of Islamic Conference, as well as for the peace process in Mindanao.

Secretary Romulo likewise stated that the Philippines will work together with Iran and other countries in ensuring the success of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in May 2010.

The Philippines is the President-elect of the 2010 NPT Review Conference which will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Ambassador Libran Cabactulan will preside over the conference on behalf of the Philippines.

The Philippines and Iran are signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, a landmark international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament.

Minister Mottaki paid a courtesy call on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo after his arrival Wednesday afternoon, prior to the bilateral meeting with Secretary Romulo. END
