Visa Exemption for Filipinos Transiting Through New Zealand

Visa Exemption for Filipinos Transiting Through New ZealandPosted: 19 Nov 2009 10:30 PM PST

20 November 2009 – The Embassy of New Zealand in Santiago has informed the Philippine Embassy in Santiago that, effective 30 November 2009, Filipino nationals transiting through New Zealand en route to other destinations will be exempt from securing transit visas.

Up until now, Filipinos transiting New Zealand (for instance changing planes) needed to hold a transit visa. This requirement will not apply from 30 November.

From that date, Filipinos won’t need a visa to transit New Zealand, provided they remain in the airport and their travel bookings show a stopover of no more than 24 hours. If they plan to stop over for more than 24 hours, or plan to leave the airport, they must apply for a visitor visa. END

20 November 2009 – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, through the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO), conducted a free training session for Filipino expatriates in Brunei last November 15.

The activity was sponsored by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

The training program aimed at equipping the participants with new knowledge, skills and techniques on body massage; teaching them the benefits of body massage; and enhancing employability options for livelihood/ income generating project in preparation for their reintegration in the Philippines.

Ms. Visallie de Jesus-Dayto, Company Director of Health Express Day Spa and Managing Director of Norain Salon at Kiulap, Brunei, acted as the resource speaker during the training. She was assisted by 12 massage therapists. Co-owner Mr. Eddy Maitimo, a Dutch national, also supported the activity for the benefit of OFWs.

In his closing remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Alexander B. Yano congratulated the 89 participants and advised them to avail themselves of the different programs offered by the Embassy, especially the training programs that offer them new knowledge and skills. He pointed out that this program was in support of the reintegration of our government to provide the OFWs other self-employment opportunities and to maximize their potentials to become entrepreneurs when they return to the Philippines.

The participants requested follow-up hands-on sessions in order for them to acquire more skills and techniques. They welcomed this training as a practical program, for which the massage techniques can also benefit their own family members. END

Lopez Group’s to bid for contracts to manage the Bacon-Manito (BacMan) & Leyte geothermal power plants

First Gen to bid for BacMan, Leyte geothermal plants

MANILA – The Lopez Group’s power generation arm intends to bid for contracts to manage the Bacon-Manito (BacMan) power plants and the Unified Leyte geothermal power plants.

“We are looking at areas where we are right now. We are eyeing, maybe BacMan power plants and Unified Leyte geothermal plants’ independent power producer administrator (IPPA),” First Gen Corp. President Federico Lopez said at the sidelines of the company’s special stockholders’ meeting.

State-run Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) is set to auction the independent power producer administrator (IPPA) contracts of the said plants next year.

PSALM has scheduled the BacMan plant as one of the first assets to be sold by PSALM next year, but not the Unified Leyte plants.

“Generally, we’re looking at achieving 70% IPPAs by the first quarter of 2010. Whether Unified Leyte will be part of that is subject to evaluation,” PSALM Vice President Conrad Tolentino said.

The Unified Leyte plants include the 125-megawatt Upper Mahiao plant, the 232-MW Malitbog and the 180-MW Mahanagdong plants, and the 51-MW Optimization plants. These are currently operated by Energy Development Corp. (EDC), a wholly-owned unit of First Gen.

EDC also owns the BacMan Geothermal Production Field (BGPF) in Sorsogon and supplies steam to the BacMan power plants, which have a total capacity of 150 MW. The BacMan plants are currently run by National Power Corp. (Napocor).

First Gen reported a net income of $7 million during the first 9 months of the year, an 85% drop from the $45.8 million recorded in the same period in 2008.

The company attributed the decline to a one-time, non-cash writedown of the deferred tax assets of EDC, following the implementation of the Renewable Energy Act in January 2009.
